For 41 years, stylist Robin Hyland has been creating new looks for people of all ages. The artistic angle of being a stylist is what has appealed to her all these years.

“I get to be creative; I enjoy the art part of it,” Hyland said. “Sculpting different kinds of hair every day brings a variety to my day.”

She also enjoys the personal relationships she’s formed.

“I have gained really wonderful friendships through my clients,” she said.

Hyland spoke with The Des Moines Register about the business.

Q: What types of hair services do you provide?

A: We offer hair care of all kinds, including up-dos for special events, sets, cuts, colors, highlights, lowlights and color corrections. Color corrections are always an educational process. The up-dos are for proms, weddings or any special kind of event. There is a nail salon next door, which works out well.

Q: Who tends to be your clients?

A: We are family friendly and work with both males and females. Our clients come from all over, from Waverly to Grimes. I’ve lived in three towns, so I pull from all directions.

Q: What else do you offer?

A: We have two tanning beds. We accept appointments or walk-ins during the same hours we’re open for styling.

Q: What do you like about your location?

A: My husband’s job brought us to Des Moines and I originally opened in a different location in Grimes. We have more foot traffic at this location.

Q: How many chairs do you have?

A: We have six chairs, so the other stylists and I can have one client in a wet sink and one in a dry chair.

Q: What styles are popular?

A: We do such a variety here. Women seem to be wanting more layered cuts instead of going all one length. It gives them softness. If someone brings in a picture that’s attractive to their facial shape, that will draw out their features, I can help make it work. If someone comes in and doesn’t have a clue, we’ll get out our books and see which they like, bangs or not.
