City of Grimes Development Services Department Releases 2020 Annual Report; Record Number of Commercial Permits
GRIMES, IA.— The City of Grimes Development Services Department released their 2020 Annual Report, which summarizes permitted development activity in the community. Within the report, Development Services Director Alex Pfaltzgraff states that “While the prior year presented a number of challenges for the Development Services Department, construction and economic development within the City of Grimes flourished.” The City issued a record number of commercial permits as well as continued, balanced growth across multiple sectors, including residential.
Commercial permit valuations exceeded residential permits in Grimes for the first time in a number of years, which is consistent with the anticipated growth trajectory of the community, which is now developing areas that maintain zoning designations suited for commercial retail and limited light industrial development.
In the past year 220 permits were issued for residential construction, including single family homes and townhomes, valued in excess of $64 million. This continues a trend of sustained substantial residential growth the community of Grimes has been experiencing for more than a decade.
A new record for commercial activity was set in 2020. Including new commercial and existing tenant improvements, the City of Grimes issued permits valued at more than $78 million. Notable commercial projects permitted included Hy-Vee Grocery, Starbucks Coffee, Dupaco Credit Union, Mr. Carwash, Dollar Tree, Culver’s Restaurant and multiple new commercial retail/office buildings.
In addition to permit activity, the report includes information about significant ongoing public infrastructure projects (i.e., 1.5-million-gallon water tower, reverse osmosis water treatment plant), ongoing studies, and a number of planned municipal improvement projects that will begin in 2021.
